Pulmonary
hypertension develops as a response to increased resistance to blood
flow. Diffuse narrowing of the pulmonary arterioles occurs. The
right side of the heart becomes enlarged due to the increased work
load of pumping blood against this resistance. Eventually,
progressive heart failure develops.
Historically, people at risk of
developing Primary Pulmonary Hypertension were women between 20 and
40 years old, although the disease can affect any sex and age. The
incidence is 8 out of 100,000 people. It is rare in children. More
common is pulmonary hypertension in infants with persistent fetal
circulation.
However, the common use of Fen-Phen
diet drugs Redux and Pondimin have led to an unprecidented number of
new Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH) cases over the last 10
years. The FDA removed these popular diet drugs from the marketplace
in 1997 because of links to Primary Pulmonary Hypertension and other
heart conditions such as mitral and aortic valve regurgitation.
If you have taken Redux or Pondimin
and have experienced any of the following medical conditions, you
should seek medical attention immediately.
Symptoms of Primary Pulmonary
Hypertension
- Progressive
shortness of breath with activity
- Hyperventilation
- Chest pain under the sternum
- Weakness
- Fatigue
- Fainting
- Lightheadedness with upright
posture
- Dizziness
- Coughing up blood
